The crud between the bearings is old solidified grease. Everything all cleaned up ready for reassembly. Note the bearing shields were removed from the inside faces of the garage door opener 2 parts to allow the grease to reach the bearings. In this case the seal actually seats within the impellor, and the carbon seal face runs against the pump body.
The hole for the retaining cotter pin had been mashed at some point, so once refitted in position I redrilled and fitted a new garage door opener 2 parts in a different position. Instead of sealing with solder as original I used RTV silicone. The flange had seen some abuse over the years so was refaced in the lathe along with the seal seating. This was then polished with wet and dry abrasive.
The pump ready for refitting to the vehicle. Obviously while the fan and pulley were off it made sense to clean and paint these as well. The impellor is the working part of the water pump and to avoid the internal parts from touching a clearance between the impellor and the housing needs to be between O.
