The design of the cab practically cried out to be fitted to an eight-wheeler and it was no surprise when DAF added a stylish eight-legger to the range in 1 DAF described the cab as both garage door opener odyssey 1000 and functional and the single bunk sleeper version was fitted as standard while a day cab was available as an option, as was the aerodynamic kit which included a cab-top deflector and side valances. The cab, with its tapered design, measured 26 metres across the front and 49 metres at the rear, and also featured a smooth front, bonded windscreen, wraparound steel bumpers and staircase access. The low floor height needed only two steps for easy access unlike many of its rivals which had three. The interior was also impressive and DAF claimed that the cab on the 85 Series offered the largest usable workspace of any cab in its class.
Detailed ergonomic research combined with the use of a compact engine, radiator and gearbox package, which was mounted low in the chassis, helped to optimise cab space. The sleeper cab accommodated a 02 metre long bunk, and was a shade over 60 metres from floor to ceiling. The drivers seat was air suspended and fully adjustable while the passenger also had ample head and legroom. The dark grey fascia and gently curved dash had a good look and the instruments and controls were well laid out and included a central warning system which provided information on the condition of the vehicle. While perhaps not as garage door opener odyssey 1000 as the DAF 95 with regard to interior noise levels, during comparison tests the DAF 85 was found to be quieter than rival models from other manufacturers.
While the cab specification may have been impressive, arguably, the proof of the truck is in the driving and in this respect it would seem that the new DAF 85 also delivered. When completing a road test on an 360 the correspondent for Commercial Motor observed: Much has been written about the driveability of the 85 and we can see why This is among the best garage door opener odyssey 1000 38-tonners we have driven. Spurred on by criticisms of the DAF 95s soft ride and cab roll, DAF has given the FT 360 taut, sure footed handling with minimal rock and roll. The front steel/ rear-air suspension and four point coil-spring cab give the driver a seat-of-the-pants feeling of whats happening that allows him to hustle the 85 through roundabouts and contra-flows without any worries. As DAF itself stated: Ride and handling: if they are not right, the truck is not right.
